Environmental Audit Committee Report

Welcome to Cleaner Bentham

The Bentham community became aware of pollution in the area following an article in the Guardian, which detailed previously unknown groundwater test results from Angus Fire showing the UK’s highest known concentration of PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in May 2024.

PFAS are also known as forever chemicals, because some can take thousands of years to disintegrate. PFAS are also known to be toxic and can cause serious health problems in humans and animals, including cancer.

PFAS are a group of over 10,000 industrial chemicals used in a huge range of consumer products, from frying pans to waterproof coats, but one of their most prolific uses is in firefighting foams.

The results of this testing show that in 2008 the groundwater samples recorded were 55,538 higher than the government’s environment standard for PFOAS and PFAS. Angus Fire, which employs up to 100 people at its Bentham site, has been producing firefighting foams, since the 1970s. Angus Fire has repeatedly breached its environmental permits, with one permit breached 20 times in the last 10 years. In 2023 the firm was warned by the Environment Agency it could be suspended after the regulator found unpermitted discharges of PFAS to the environment of Bentham.

The community is deeply concerned and has created this group which aims to undertake independent testing, source legal assistance, support for those with health conditions caused by the pollution and remedy the pollution.
